Eating Gluten-Free in Canmore and Banff: A Local Family's Guide to Celiac-Friendly Dining
Discovering great restaurants, unexpected favourites and sweet treats in the Canadian Rockies.
Living in Canmore, we're fortunate to have an incredible collection of restaurants, cafés and independent food businesses on our doorstep. But when someone in your family has celiac disease, choosing where to eat involves a little more consideration than simply deciding what sounds good for dinner.
Celiac disease is part of our family's everyday life. We've learned that there's a significant difference between a restaurant offering gluten-free options and one that genuinely understands the importance of preventing cross-contact.
Fortunately, Canmore and Banff have some wonderful establishments that make dining out enjoyable. Here are a few of our family favourites, along with some other Bow Valley restaurants worth exploring.
Wild Orchid Bistro: Our Family Favourite
If there's one restaurant we return to regularly, it's Wild Orchid Bistro & Sushi Lounge in Canmore.
Located at Silver Creek Lodge, Wild Orchid offers an entirely gluten-free menu, something that's surprisingly rare even in communities with excellent dining scenes.
The Asian-inspired menu includes sushi, creative appetizers and flavourful main courses, all enjoyed against a backdrop of Rocky Mountain views.
What makes Wild Orchid particularly special for our family is the freedom to order from the entire menu without having to navigate which dishes can be modified. For anyone living with celiac disease, that's a luxury that's difficult to overstate.
And importantly, it's a restaurant we'd happily recommend regardless of dietary restrictions.
Pizza Hut: An Unexpected Gluten-Free Discovery
I'll admit, Pizza Hut wasn't the first place I expected to find thoughtful gluten-free preparation procedures.
But sometimes the most useful discoveries come from unexpected places.
We've been pleasantly surprised by the attention given to gluten-free pizzas, including their preparation in separate pans. Pizza Hut Canada's published gluten-free procedures also describe separately stored crusts, dedicated utensils and other precautions.
Of course, Pizza Hut is not a dedicated gluten-free kitchen, and procedures should always be confirmed at the individual restaurant. For our family, however, it's been a welcome option when we're looking for a convenient pizza night.
It's also a reminder that celiac-friendly dining isn't necessarily about expensive restaurants or elaborate menus. Sometimes it's about a kitchen that takes preparation seriously.
Lovely Ice Cream: A Sweet Spot for Everyone
One of Canmore's delightful little discoveries is Lovely Ice Cream, located at the Shops of Canmore.
Lovely produces small-batch ice cream using thoughtfully selected ingredients, and its treats are gluten-free. They also offer dairy-free and vegan selections.
For families managing celiac disease, an ice cream shop where the cookies and other treats are gluten-free makes the experience much more enjoyable.
There's another detail I particularly appreciate: they have an espresso machine. That means the children can enjoy an ice cream while the adults settle in with a proper coffee.
Whether you're finishing a bike ride, returning from a mountain adventure or simply looking for an afternoon treat, Lovely is an easy place to recommend.
Banff: More Gluten-Free Options Than You Might Expect
Banff's restaurant scene has evolved considerably, and several establishments have put real thought into accommodating guests with celiac disease.
Some restaurants associated with the Banff Hospitality Collective offer gluten-free choices and dedicated preparation equipment. Dedicated fryers are especially important because foods that are naturally gluten-free can become unsafe when cooked in oil shared with breaded products.
LUPO Italian Ristorante is particularly noteworthy. According to Banff & Lake Louise Tourism, the restaurant offers a dedicated gluten-free fryer, separate pasta preparation equipment and a designated gluten-free preparation space. For someone with celiac disease, being able to enjoy a proper Italian meal with these precautions is encouraging.
Magpie & Stump is another interesting option, with much of its Mexican-inspired menu adaptable to gluten-free dining, including corn tortilla tacos and nachos.
Beyond the Banff Hospitality Collective, Farm & Fire and Nourish Bistro are also worth considering. Both have been identified by Banff & Lake Louise Tourism as offering dedicated gluten-free fryers.
As always, we recommend speaking directly with the restaurant about current kitchen procedures before ordering.
Lake Louise Ski Resort: Gluten-Free Options on the Mountain
A day of skiing at Lake Louise is one of the great pleasures of living in the Bow Valley. For families managing celiac disease, finding something suitable to eat at a ski resort can sometimes be a challenge.
We've been pleased to discover that the cafeterias at Lake Louise Ski Resort offer a number of gluten-free food options. Having choices available on the mountain makes it easier to enjoy a full day of skiing without having to pack every meal from home.
The resort identifies gluten-free options at the Lodge of Ten Peaks Cafeteria and the Powder Keg Lounge, making these useful stops to consider when planning lunch between runs.
As with any shared kitchen, it's important to ask staff about ingredients, preparation surfaces and potential cross-contact. But knowing there are gluten-free choices available is certainly welcome, particularly for families spending their winter weekends on the slopes.
It's another example of how the Bow Valley lifestyle can be enjoyed while navigating celiac disease.
What We Look for When Dining Out
Over time, we've learned that a few simple questions can make a meaningful difference.
Does the restaurant have a dedicated gluten-free fryer? Are separate utensils and preparation surfaces used? Does the kitchen understand celiac disease rather than simply gluten preferences? And are staff comfortable checking ingredients and procedures with the chef?
A gluten-free designation on a menu is a useful starting point, but it's the preparation process that matters.
We've also found that restaurants willing to explain their procedures clearly tend to make the dining experience more comfortable.
Enjoying the Bow Valley, Without Missing Out
One of the great pleasures of living in Canmore and spending time in Banff is the lifestyle that surrounds us. A day skiing, hiking or cycling often ends with a meal together, a coffee or an ice cream.
For families living with celiac disease, those simple experiences shouldn't have to feel complicated.
We're grateful for the local businesses that recognize this and put thought into how they prepare and serve their food.
This isn't intended to be an exhaustive list of gluten-free restaurants in Canmore and Banff. It's a collection of personal favourites and promising options that we hope will help other families, residents and visitors discover more of what the Bow Valley has to offer.
And as we discover more places that take celiac dining seriously, we'll continue adding to the list.
Please note: Restaurant menus, ingredients and kitchen procedures can change. Although the establishments mentioned offer gluten-free options or have reported specific preparation practices, diners with celiac disease should always confirm current protocols directly with the restaurant before ordering.
